Arkle looking over Loch Stack
Arkle looking over Loch Stack

Arkle (meaning flat-topped hill (ark fjell) in norse) is a large and distinctive mountain situated in Sutherland in the far north-west corner of the Scottish Highlands that features in many classic shots and calendars. Although Arkle dominates the skyline from the main Scourie to Durness road this classic view is only seen if you venture a few miles down the A838 road towards Lairg. The mountain is made up of glistening white Cambrian quartzite, laid down around 530 million years ago on an uneven basement of much older Lewisian gneiss and tilted at a slight angle which viewed across Loch Stack gives an unmistakable profile.
